Marbled Dipped Apples (Pioneer Woman)

This is a really unique project, fun and beautiful.  People love them!  Here are some tips to make this a little less overwhelming:

  • Any apples would be great with this.  I used Fuji apples instead of Granny Smith.
  • The "colored chocolate disks" are actually Wilton Candy Melts, available at Walmart, Amazon, Michaels, etc.
  • Use a 3-cup glass measuring cup for the base color and a 2-cup measure for each of the other colors.  Much easier to spoon out and to clean!
  • (Contrary to package instructions) I melted the candies for 2 minutes on full power in the microwave.  Don't be discouraged when they don't look as though they've melted - just stir with a spoon anyway.  If they are still not melted, zap them again 1 minute at a time.
  • After they have hardened, slice off vertical sections of apple rather than trying to bite into the apple.
  • Don't stress about perfection - they will be beautiful, no matter what you do!

Ingredients

  • 8 small Granny Smith apples, washed and dried, stems removed.
  • Three 12-ounce bags colored chocolate discs, for the base color
  • One 12-ounce bag colored chocolate discs in a second color
  • One 12-ounce bag colored chocolate discs in a third color

Directions

Line a baking sheet with wax paper. Insert ice pop sticks into the cores of the apples and set aside.
Place the colored chocolate discs into separate glass bowls and melt in the microwave according to package instructions. Drizzle a few tablespoons second and third colors in to the base color; do not stir.
One at a time, fully dip the apples in the base color, twisting and turning as you remove them to create marbled patterns. Allow the excess to drip off, then set on the prepared baking sheet. Refrigerate the dipped apples for at least 15 minutes to harden.
Special equipment: 8 ice pop sticks
